Our Humane Society also provides animal sheltering services to all of Kaufman County, the City of Kaufman, Forney and Crandall—all of which are over 20 miles away or further. In addition, we also service a large community of metro-plex visitors with weekend get-a-ways in the lake area. At any given time our population at the facility is approximately 140+ animals. Our Humane Society took in over 3000 animals in 2008 and is on its way to breaking that number in 2009. HSCCL sits on 2 acres bound by fencing of various types and in various conditions. Three very old structures house the dogs and cats that we receive. The main building has 16 indoor/outdoor kennel runs for the dogs and a cat room with 13 cages for the cats. One ancillary structure for dogs is not fully enclosed and has 30 fenced runs. The metal roof of this structure has several leaks and the walls are comprised of wood fencing material. The 3rd structure, called the Annex, is an old metal building with 8 indoor kennel runs in need of repair.

Malakoff Schools Continue Moving Towards Excellence The Texas Education Agency indicates that Malakoff is continuing to make great strides towards excellence on the academic front. The data indicates that Tool Elementary is the first Malakoff campus in many years to reach the level of exemplary. Malakoff Elementary School and High School barely missed that mark, receiving recognized status. Malakoff Middle School as well as the District as a whole maintained acceptable ratings. Closer examination of the data tells the real story. Each campus is rated on a different number of indicators based on the number of students the campus has in various sub-groups. Tool was rated on nine different indicators. All nine were in the exemplary range. At Malakoff Elementary, the campus was rated on eleven indicators. Of those, nine were in the exemplary range and two were in the recognized range (both in science). The Middle School was rated on fifteen indicators with eleven of those falling in the exemplary range. There was one score in math that fell in the recognized range and three science scores that fell in the acceptable range. The High School was rated on twelve indicators. Ten fell in the exemplary range with two science scores in the recognized range. At the District level, twenty-two indicators were measured. Fifteen of the twenty-two were exemplary, six (two in math and four in science) were recognized, and only one score (in science) fell in the acceptable range. Overall, 84% of the scores fell within the exemplary range compared to 54% the year before. As these scores indicate, the staff continues to be focused on meeting each student’s individual needs in order to prepare them for the future. Purtis Creek State Park 14225 FM 316 Eustace TX 75124 903/425-2332 History: Purtis Creek State Park is located in Henderson and Van Zandt Counties and has a total acreage of 1582.4. The park was acquired in 1977 from private owners and was opened to the public in 1988. Purtis Creek State Park is located in an area where the Wichita and Caddo Indians once roamed. Just east of the park, on private property, is a cliff over hang that was used by unknown Indians as a temporary shelter. Petroglyphs are carved into the rock walls that indicate this area was a good hunting area. This area being well populated with game caused an influx of Anglos in the early to mid-1800s. Many small towns and communities were established during this time. The road that lies on the south border of the park at the entrance was known as the Tyler to Porter's Bluff Road, a well known stage route from East Texas to the Trinity River. Along this route, just northeast of Edom near the Neches River, is the site where the famed Cherokee Indian Chief Boles was slain in the Battle of the Neches in 1839. Activities: Activities include camping, picnicking, fishing, boating, and hiking. The park rents paddle boats, kayaks and canoes. Tours: Please check the Calendar of Events for Interpretive programs and tours. Special programs are given for groups upon request. Check the Calendar for events and access restrictions scheduled within the next 3 months. More Information on outdoor activities from the Experience Texas page. Lake Procedures: Due to the small size of the lake, a 50-boat limit is in effect with a wake/speed restriction. Once the 50-boat limit has been reached on the lake, waiting boats may enter as other boats leave. Customers who are not camping may stay overnight on the lake by paying an per person activity use fee, which expires at 7 am. Area Attractions: Nearby points of interest are Fairfield Lake State Park, Texas State Railroad, and Tyler State Park; First Monday Trade Days in Canton; Cedar Creek Reservoir; and the Dallas/Ft Worth areas. While you are in the area, visit the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens a unique TPWD facility showcasing aquatic life and sport fishing in Texas. Campsites & Other Facilities: The facilities available are campsites with water and electricity; water only campsites; primitive campsites (minimum 1/2 mile hike); an overflow camping area; a covered group pavilion; lighted fishing piers; fish-cleaning shelters; boat ramps; courtesy docks; picnic sites; and a playground.
